Cell and Portal Alignment Theory

A cell is a node that allows the engine to render the area that the player is in. A portal is a window that allows you to look into the next area and is typically the next area that the player is headed.  You want to configure the entrances and exits from one room to another in such a way that no neighboring portal align in a straight vector.

The diagrams below represent the areas assigned to cells as brown segments, the red lines represent the portals, and the green line illustrates whether or not your cell layout is properly configured.

In the first diagram, you can see all the way from cell one to cell five, but the next two diagrams show that you can not see cell four from cell one, because the middle portals are out of alignment.
